Health.
These projects are run in partnership with the Livingstone health
department and the ministry of health. All
volunteers are eligible for these programs but there
is great need for qualified personnel in all fields.
A detailed personal profile will be submitted to
the appropriate health centre and clinics all of
which are situated in Livingstone and surrounds.
Education.
We presently work with 5 schools and liase with the Department of
education. Most schools in Livingstone have
dilapidated infrastructure, very few books and desks
and an acute lack of teaching staff. All volunteers
can help in this area even if they are posted on
another program. We are very involved with after
school activities especially sports. English is the
main language here and many children are thrilled if
the time is taken to share a book or just to chat.
We are committed to providing computers to all our
schools and are working on shipping a container of
books from the USA.
Building
Over the last 40 years much of the infrastructure within the area has been
neglected and is in dire need of renovation and repair. This coupled with a fast
growing population mean we are always busy on building classrooms, wells, sports
facilities and much more.
HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Support projects.
Programmes are implemented in partnership with the District AIDS
Task Force, the District Health Management Board and the District Administration
and planning office. HIV is a very serious problem throughout Zambia. We cover
all aspects of care and welcome professional medical personnel as well as
non-professionals. HIV awareness campaigns are constantly underway here in
Livingstone as are counselling sessions.
Sports
Run in conjunction with the Ministry of sport this program takes children and
adults of all ages and organises football, basketball and other events. We
renovate playing fields and supply equipment, which is always in short supply.
Wildlife
We have two programs at present.
The Elephant Chilli Project bases volunteers from our house and each day they go
out to local communities to help with all aspects of chilli growing and
production. The chillies are part of an outreach growers program and are also
used to keep elephants away from food crops. Mabula farm is a highly recommended
option where the volunteer lives on the game farm and helps in all aspects of
farm management. We also involve volunteers with the local school.
Community
Most volunteers have the afternoon free since many programs start
at 7am and finish at 1pm or 2pm. During this free time we offer a range of
optional activities that help the local community and keep the volunteer busy.
These programs include sport and building projects. We also offer visits to the
local chiefdom and to the Victoria Falls. These activities are free. We also
have a range of activities where we have organised for discounts for our
volunteers.
Due to the HIV crisis affecting Zambia there are a great many
orphans. We support two orphan homes with finance, education equipment, building
projects and education. All volunteers are welcome and we recommend at least a
visit for all our volunteers we spend some afternoons at these homes.
