Chimpanzee & Wildlife Orphan Care Project
Join us on this unique project in northern Zambia, and get the chance to help take care of over a hundred chimpanzees in the biggest chimp sanctuary in the world! Interact with young orphaned chimps, record and learn about the animals' behaviour, and help educate local Zambian children about chimpanzees and other wildlife. A very hands-on experience, and a unique way to contribute to the conservation of this endangered species.
Project Highlights:
-Interact with young orphaned chimpanzees, who are very much in need of some love and affection
-Be a part of the day to day life in the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world
-Play an important role in the conservation of this endangered species
-Assist with educating local Zambia children about wildlife conservation
The orphanage was founded in 1983, when a badly injured chimp was brought to a family's farm in northern Zambia. News of the chimp's recovery spread, and the family soon found themselves with a large number of chimpanzees that had been saved from poachers or circuses. With over a hundred chimpanzees, it is now the largest chimp sanctuary in the world.
Although chimpanzee rehabilitation is the primary focus of the orphanage, other animals benefit from the care and attention received at the orphanage as well. Antelopes, baboons, monkeys, tortoises, squirrels, bush babies, dogs and birds have all been nursed back to health at the orphanage, including the biggest resident of all - Billy the hippo.
